Within the tourism sector, particularly in the Mediterranean region, beaches constitute a basic and major resource.
In addition to their natural attractions, beaches are expected to offer many other services: some to relieve human pressure on nature and others for beach users themselves, who increasingly demand better quality services.
An example of the former would be the need to keep the water and sand clean, among other things. In terms of services for the beach users, these might include showers, food and drink establishments, rescue and lifesaving posts, public telephones, water sports areas, beach equipment rental, keeping the access points well-maintained, offering nearby parking facilities, etc.
